Lago Goilett, mountain lake in the Italian Alps

“I know I’m going to die soon, but I’m not entirely sure I want to speed the process up,” said Edward when Tom suddenly stopped the car half a mile from their destination.

“Stay calm, we can do it,” Tom said, trying to calm Hellen’s father, and he climbed out of the car.

“What are you going to do?” asked Edward, following Tom around to the trunk.

“You’re my prisoner, and it has to look like it. Here, pull that over your head.” Tom handed him the black cloth bag from the binoculars. Then he opened the rear doors of the SUV and gestured invitingly.

“Are you serious?” Edward asked, but he reluctantly climbed inside.

“Give me your hands.”

Edward stopped Tom before he tied him up. “Aren’t you afraid they’re going to recognize you despite the mask?”

Tom thought for a moment. “No, actually. The guy I was trying to catch in Venice was very similar to me in build, and we had almost the same hair color. The mask will take care of the rest.”

“And your voice? How do you know he wasn’t from Iceland and had a terrible accent?”

“Okay, fine, there’s still some risk. But he was most likely British, right?”

“You’re gambling for high stakes. But if my daughter trusts you, then I can, too.” Edward reached out his hands again for Tom to tie.

“Don’t worry.” He bound Edward’s hands with a cable tie, pulled the bag over his face, and slammed the doors.

“If I don’t get out of this alive, Hellen’s never going to forgive you, you know,” Edward shouted as Tom, behind the wheel again, pulled back onto the road.

“That’s my job. Nothing’s going to happen to you, trust me. Comfortable back there?”

It wasn’t only Edward who was nervous. Tom’s own adrenaline level was rising. They were driving straight into the lion’s den. Only a few dozen yards separated them now from the house. Off to the left stood the mighty helicopter, its spinning blades stirring up a small snow squall. Tom turned off the ignition and climbed out as a soldier approached. As he’d seen another man do earlier, he saluted in greeting, presenting the ring in the process.

“You’re late, Galahad. Why the delay?” the soldier yelled to make himself heard over the noise from the chopper. The man’s face was hidden behind ski goggles and a face mask. A tactical helmet and snow camouflage gear rounded out the high-tech soldier look. He carried a Heckler & Koch assault rifle slung over his shoulder. Tom went around the car and opened the back of the SUV.

The moment of truth had arrived. Tom cleared his throat and hoped that his British accent didn’t sound too amateurish.

“This is why. My assignment was to bring this man here. He got a little unruly on the way,” Tom shouted back as he helped Edward out of the back.

Without another word, the soldier led them to the helicopter. Bent low, with their hands up to protect themselves from the icy wind driven by the rotors, the three men made their way to the rear hatch of the helicopter.
